# Dealing with inter-personal conflict and difficult individuals: participant handout

This is a professional development activity intended to develop skills related to inter-personal conflict in a scientific environment.

## Learning outcomes

Trainees will:

* Recognize strategies that high-conflict individuals use
* Identify strategies for disrupting attacks/conflict
* Identify strategies for protecting themselves if attacked

## Assignment

Please read the following scenario and write down answers to the questions listed below.

### Set-Up for the Scenario

(Note: this scenario is fictitious and was generated with the help of ChatGPT)

Alex, a postdoctoral fellow in Jamie's lab, has been working on a joint research project with Dr. Johnson, a senior professor from another institution. Their interactions were primarily virtual via Zoom, but they connected more personally during a research conference in Spain. At the conference, Alex and Dr. Johnson shared meals and spent time chatting at the hotel bar, discussing their children and Alex's challenges with work-life balance due to caring for a child with special needs. Dr. Johnson expressed understanding and support during these conversations.

Months later, Dr. Johnson visits Alex's university and has a one-on-one meeting with Alex after delivering a seminar. During this meeting, the discussion turns to the progress of their joint project, specifically Alex's analysis of data generated in Dr. Johnson's lab. When Alex informs Dr. Johnson that the data do not support the initial hypothesis, the conversation escalates as Dr. Johnson adopts a confrontational and accusatory tone. Alex, meanwhile, attempts to defuse the situation while defending their scientific integrity and choices.

### Dialogue Between Alex and Dr. Johnson

**Dr. Johnson:** "So, Alex, I assume you've had enough time to analyze the data from our lab. What’s the verdict? Does it confirm the hypothesis we discussed?"

**Alex:** "Thank you for asking, Dr. Johnson. I’ve carefully analyzed the data using the methods we agreed upon, but unfortunately, the results don’t support the hypothesis. I believe the data suggest a different direction, which could still be scientifically interesting."

**Dr. Johnson:** "Different direction? That’s disappointing, Alex. I have to say, I’m surprised. Are you sure you didn’t miss something in the analysis? Perhaps your focus wasn’t entirely on the project?"

**Alex:** "I assure you, Dr. Johnson, I’ve been meticulous in my approach. I followed best practices in the field and double-checked the results. I’m confident in the integrity of the analysis."

**Dr. Johnson:** "Confident? Well, several people at the conference in Spain told me you’re a superficial scientist. They said you lack the depth required for rigorous research. I didn’t want to believe them, but now I’m wondering if they were right."

**Alex:** "I’m sorry to hear that, Dr. Johnson. I’ve always strived to approach science with care and thoroughness. If there’s any specific concern about my methods, I’d be happy to address it and explain my approach in detail."

**Dr. Johnson:** "Let me ask you this—did you use AI to write the analysis code? If you did, that could be considered scientific misconduct. Journals are cracking down on this sort of thing, and I wouldn’t hesitate to report it to Jamie or even the professional conduct committee."

**Alex:** "Dr. Johnson, I assure you that I personally wrote the analysis code and followed all ethical guidelines. I’m aware of the concerns surrounding AI tools, and I’ve taken care to avoid anything that might compromise scientific integrity."

**Dr. Johnson:** "Scientific integrity? You mean to tell me you’re the authority on that? How can you be sure your judgment isn’t clouded by your personal distractions, such as the large amount of time you take off from work to take care of your son's condition?

**Alex:** "I understand your concerns, Dr. Johnson, but I can assure you that I’ve maintained a professional balance. My personal responsibilities don’t interfere with my ability to conduct rigorous scientific research. If you’d like, I can share the analysis workflow and results for transparency."

**Dr. Johnson:** "Don’t patronize me, Alex. I don’t need your workflow. What I need is for you to redo the analysis the way I suggested. That will support the hypothesis. It’s simple, really."

**Alex:** "I understand your perspective, Dr. Johnson, but I believe altering the analysis in that way would conflict with best practices in the field. If the data don’t support the hypothesis, it might mean we need to generate additional data or explore alternative explanations. "

**Dr. Johnson:** "Following the evidence? That’s rich coming from someone who can’t even manage a simple analysis. I’ll be speaking to Jamie about this, and don’t be surprised if your university's research integrity committee hears about your so-called approach."

**Alex:** (speechless)

## Questions

1. What stands out for you from this interaction?
2. What should Alex do next?
3. Should Alex have responded differently? When and how?
4. The scenario is intentionally gender-neutral. Would Alex' or Dr. Johnson's gender and/or ethnicity make a difference?
